Inducing Immune Tolerance in Non-Matched Recipients without Conditioning
Dr. Leventhal is planning to build on his current research.[Note: Through his current protocol, Dr. Leventhal gives patients cells that have been derivedfrom donor cells. The presence of these cells encourages the transplant recipient’s immune system to produce new cells that enable the immune system to become tolerant. ]
Guided by the insights gained through his current work, Dr. Leventhal now seeks to launch a project that will focus on inducing immune tolerance without having to administer medications or therapies that weaken an organ recipient’s immune system in advance.
Dr. Leventhal hypothesizes that it would be possible to extract cells from a transplant recipient and to manipulate and expand these cells outside the recipient’s body. Once the cells become capable of inducing tolerance in a recipient’s immune system, they would be re-infused into the recipient, who would not have required any immune-weakening pre-conditioning to accept the cells.
